State of the Art Research in Volcanic Basins

The VMAPP team are active researchers and experts in the field of Volcanic Basins. As part of VMAPP we undertake research projects in themes that are guided by sponsors to help with current exploration issues in volcanic basins. These modules are supplied to sponsors of VMAPP1 (RM1-5) and VMAPP2 (RM6-10).

Research Module 1:

The Basalt Sediment Transition

This module looks in detail at the base basalt contact with the sedimentary basin. Examples from a 3D seismic cube in Mid Norway, provide excellent examples of this transition offshore, along with global analogues from the VMAPP teams onshore catalogue. The module is provided as a PPT and PDF report.

Research Module 2:

Petrophysical Properties of Volcanic Rocks

Understanding rock properties in volcanic margins represents a challenge. This module, provided as a detaile PDF report, provides examples of rock property information form key volkcanic facies including:

  • Volcanic reservoir properties
  • Developments in volcanic borehole analysis
  • Petrophysical database
  • Field/borehole cases (Iceland, Hawaii, Skye)

Research Module 3:

The Basalt Sediment Transition

This module looks maturation/migration in igneous influenced basins, including 2d modelling of intrusions in sedimentary host rocks. The module is provided as a PPT and PDF report and highlights:

  • Intrusion induced maturation
  • Fluid expulsion around sills
  • Hydrothermal vent complexes
  • Petroleum system modeling

Research Module 4:

Rift to Drift Transition

A research module (with PDF report and PPT content) dedicated to margin scale including:

  • Nature of continent-ocean transition
  • Thermal evolution of rifted margins
  • NE Greenland sills and vent complexes
  • Case histories

Research Module 5:

Evaporites, carbonates and volcanics

The interaction of volcanics with carbonates and evaporite sequences is of current interest in volcanic margins, particularly the South Atlantic and Siberian Craton. This module presents a PDF report on this subject with a detailed case study from Siberia outcrops visited and researched by the VMAPP team.
